Idoneidade reconhecida pelo Colégio da Especialidade de Patologia Clínica da Ordem dos Médicos para a realização de “Estudos Espermológicos” (Abril de 1988).

Doutoramento em Medicina, especialidade de Patologia (tema: “Infertilidade masculina -análise cromossómica e do esperma”), com aprovação por unanimidade com Distinção e Louvor (1989).

Especialista em Genética Médica pela Ordem dos Médicos (desde Abril de 1992).

Director do Departamento de Genética da Faculdade de Medicina do Porto (desde Março de 2011).

Regente da disciplina de Genética Médica da Faculdade de Medicina do Porto (desde o ano lectivo de 1995/1996).

Orientador de sete teses de doutoramento, duas em Medicina e sete em Biologia Humana.

Membro da Comissão para Atribuição do Patrocínio Científico da Secção Regional do Norte da Ordem dos Médicos (desde Janeiro de 2014).

Membro do Conselho Nacional para a Avaliação da Formação da Ordem dos Médicos (desde Abril de 2014).

Membro do Conselho Consultivo da Faculdade de Medicina do Porto (desde Setembro de 2010).

Presidente da Comissão Organizadora da Gala dos 190 anos da Faculdade de Medicina do Porto (25 de Novembro de 2015).

Membro do Conselho Nacional de Procriação Medicamente Assistida (desde Maio de 2007).

Former Associate Editor da Molecular Human Reproduction (desde Janeiro de 2014).

Pioneiro, em Portugal, das técnicas de Procriação Medicamente Assistida seguintes:

– Inseminação Artificial intraconjugal, com preparação “in vitro” do esperma (Maio de 1985).

– Crioconservação do esperma em azoto líquido (Outubro de 1985).

– Inseminação Artificial com esperma de dador (Outubro de 1985).

– Microinjecção Intracitoplasmática de um espermatozóide (Junho de 1994).

Director e responsável pela equipa que obteve as primeiras gravidezes mundiais em duas situações: imobilidade total dos espermatozóides (através da microinjecção intracitoplasmática, 1996) e paraplegia com ausência de ejaculação devido a traumatismo da espinal medula com arma de fogo (microinjecção intracitoplasmática após colheita do esperma por electroejaculação endorectal, 1997).

Director e responsável pela equipa que introduziu em Portugal o Diagnóstico Genético Pré-Implantação (1998).

Director e responsável pela equipa que introduziu em Portugal a lavagem e preparação dos espermatozóides nos casos de homens portadores do VIH, VHB e VHC (1999).
